Following our renovation of the Charles Chu Asian Art Reading Room, Connecticut College asked us to plan for the renovation of the entire 100,000 sf library.
The Charles E. Shain Library was constructed in 1973 in the academic “Brutalist” style. The renovation transforms the building, enhances views into and from the building, provides social connections between the library floors, and creates a modern, vibrant Information Commons. A large double-height window over the entry provides an informal lounge area with sweeping views of the campus. Collaboration ‘pods’ line the new stair and provide framed glimpses of activity.
