Civic buildings can be distinguished from other buildings in the way they can represent the values of our society. Some of these values will be abstract – a civic building should be expressive of ideals like openness, honesty and stability; other goals are subjective – the building should be comfortable, dignified, up-to-date and respectful of the particular context; and still other goals are concrete – the building should be accessible, sustainable, durable and secure. As architects, we integrate the general goals desirable for civic buildings, and those issues that are specific to the project and the site where it is located.
