SSA Joins Diversity Forum for Industry Professionals at Wellesley

Schwartz/Silver designer Haydée Casellas participated in Wellesley College’s Diversity in Design and Construction symposium on April 2, hosted by the college’s office of Planning, Design and Construction.

Haydée is part of the Schwartz/Silver team currently working with Wellesley on renovations and upgrades to Billings Hall. She joined dozens of representatives from local universities and architect/engineering/construction firms who packed the Wellesley College Club to discuss the concept of going “Beyond a Quota” and creating more opportunities for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the industry.

Among the questions at hand: How to engage women and minorities at an earlier age to inspire interest in A/E/C careers? How to boost diversity at all levels of the work force, including supervisory and management positions?

The group focused on three areas: academics, community, and business, and brainstormed ways to promote diversity in all areas. Ideas included shadowing and internship opportunities for high school students intrigued by the industry; the creation of joint ventures with smaller firms; and a commitment to building relationships with industry professionals who may have a completely different perspective.

Wellesley College is already making plans to continue the conversation, and we look forward to participating in future symposiums.
