Heritage Harbor will be both Rhode Island’s state history museum and an education and research center. Located in a former power plant, a consortium of nineteen museums, historical societies, and ethnic organizations will join to develop a common home under one roof. New space will be created by an “insertion” – an interior structure that is built independent of the building’s envelope – which allows for a large atrium space to house exhibit spaces. The Caravel, a replica of a 15th century Portuguese sailing ship, will be the centerpiece for the museum.
