87 Trumbull Street, Yale University
New Haven, Connecticut
87 Trumbull Street is a new 37,000 square foot building for the Department of Economics at Yale University, bringing together the entire department which had previously been scattered in multiple disconnected buildings along Hillhouse Avenue. The building serves as the home for the Tobin Center for Economic Policy, and connects to two existing historic buildings, 28 Hillhouse and 30 Hillhouse (both built in 1884), and to the Institution for Social and Policy Studies at 89 Trumbull Street and 77 Prospect Street.
Named after the late James Tobin, faculty member and Nobel laureate, the Tobin Center advances rigorous, evidence-based research intended to define and inform policy debate, and to prototype new ways to address pressing domestic policy needs.
The building has a variety of spaces that foster collaboration and communication among the students and faculty. The exterior is designed to be sympathetic with the scale and context of the Hillhouse Avenue Historic District. It is also energy-efficient and the first all-electric facility at Yale University.
